Is There a Travel Insurance for Those with Pre-Existing Conditions?

Travel Insurance for Those with Pre-Existing Conditions

The answer to that question is yes. So if you have a pre-existing condition, you should definitely consider getting a travel insurance package that will cover you for that specific condition as well as anything else that you think you need during the trip. There are mainly three types of travel insurance which could cover you for your pre-existing condition i.e. total pre-existing condition cover, limited travel insurance cover and long term cover.

1. Total pre-existing condition cover is obviously a more expensive option but it will offer you comprehensive cover for any pre-existing conditions.  It will pay for any visits you may have to make to a doctor while you are abroad plus any hospital stays.  It will also cover you for air ambulance or repatriation of your remains if you were to die while on holiday.  Some of these packages will also pay for a relative to travel out to you if you had a medical emergency.

2. A limited travel insurance policy for pre-existing conditions will normally pay for repatriation of remains should you suddenly die while abroad plus it will pay for a limited amount of hospital or doctor’s visits, normally one.  Some of these plans will include a cash payment for a sudden recurrence of your pre-existing condition while you are away.

3. If you are going to be away for a long period or are planning on working abroad, then a long term pre-existing condition insurance policy is probably the best option for you.  Many of these plans will cover you after a certain period of time or will have limits to the amount of cover they will provide each year.  They could also include large excesses.

It is very vital to check your policy and understand what it really covers. There is no point in paying out for an insurance policy that will not cover you should any misfortune occur while traveling. You should also inquire with your provider how they define a pre-existing condition as it may differ from your idea of a pre-existing condition. This misunderstanding can result to a huge dilemma.
